The interpretation services of the European Commission are planning a training initiative to train sign language interpreters in international sign (IS). The scheme will support a small number (maximum 4) of national sign language interpreters who have some experience working in IS, to help them make the transition to working in EU conferences using IS.

Experienced interpreters, in collaboration with the European Union of the Deaf (EUD) will provide hands-on support and IS enhancement. The scheme offers the possibility to practice the techniques, and improve the knowledge of IS in the context of conference interpreting within the EU institutions.

The training will consist of sessions focussing on interpreting into and from IS. It will include practice in live meetings, observing experienced IS interpreters, immersion in an IS environment, as well as information sessions on EU policies, and skill-based courses on meeting preparation.

The programme, aimed at experienced national sign language interpreters, will last for four non-consecutive working (i.e. 5 days) weeks in the first half of 2020:

  • Week 1+2 : 27 Jan – 7 Feb
  • Week 3 : 16 – 20 March
  • Week 4 : 5 – 9 May

The scheme will take place on the premises of the European Commission and the EUD, both in Brussels.
